Technology makes learning fun and efficient

Updated: Jul 13, 2022

People's ability to absorb, practise, and apply new knowledge is not novel. However, research is uncovering more and more about the most effective learning methods. And, as new technology is developed, these new insights will be more easily implemented.

In this section, we'll go over some 'learning principles' and how we use technology to get the most out of it.

Allow participants to demonstrate what they have learned.

Of course, your own practise is the best place to do this, but the trainers and other participants aren't always present. Participants can use learning technology to record video demonstrations of how they apply their knowledge and skills in the real world. Feedback can be given in a secure environment. We can organise participants to give (online) presentations of their practical results, bridging the gap between the safe learning environment and their own work environment. This allows for compliments and feedback.

In this way, participants are able to apply their new knowledge outside of the safe learning environment. Reflecting on your actions and applying your knowledge and skills must go hand in hand.

Reflection can have a somewhat negative connotation at times. A section appears to be finished, and then the 'endless talking' begins. Nonetheless, learning researchers emphasise the importance of reflection. Reflection works well when used as a means rather than an end in itself. Technology can help with this because it allows you to shape the reflection in a variety of ways, such as score lists, open questions, or videos. This does not make it a 'writing assignment,' but rather an exercise in developing a critical perspective on one's learning process. Challenging innovations and new forms of expression pique the participant's interest.

We could give many more examples and reasons why technology is useful, but we also think it's cool to use the latest and greatest. And our participants as well! Just give it a shot and see what happens. Mentimeter, Socrative, Wevideo, Vyond, mmhhmm, Draw.io., Mural are all cool tools that can help you create a beautiful product (usually for free) if you use your creativeness.
